Preamble for the National Service Scheme (NSS)
The National Service Scheme (NSS) was established in India on September 24, 1969, commemorating the birth centenary of Mahatma Gandhi. The scheme was initiated with the primary aim of developing the personality and character of students through voluntary community service. NSS is a flagship program of the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India, designed to provide students with an opportunity to engage in meaningful community service and contribute significantly to nation-building. The motto of NSS, “Not Me, But You,” underscores the essence of democratic living and highlights the importance of selfless service and the cultivation of social and civic responsibility among the youth.
At Government Arts and Science College, Thennangur, we proudly host a vibrant NSS unit which has 100 dedicated and enthusiastic students. This unit fosters the holistic development of students while addressing the diverse needs of our community. Our NSS unit is guided by the following primary objectives:

– Promoting health and hygiene by conducting health camps and awareness drives.
– Encouraging environmental sustainability through tree plantation drives, cleanliness
campaigns, and waste management programs.
– Advancing education and literacy by organizing literacy campaigns and tutoring sessions for
underprivileged children.
